You do not need to delete images. Upload of images and insertion into an article are separate operations. In your articles just Toggle Editor to HTML mode, find an image tag and type in something like alt="[what it shows]". In the Images and Links section there is a field to enter the Alt Text. When you insert an image in the body of the text use the Media item from the CMS Content button and you will also see a field to enter the Alt Text after selecting an image.
